Find your Way in France with GPS plus Sat Nav
Regular users of in-car satellite navigation devices are used to simply typing in an address and a postcode and then following the directions to their destination. But it doesn't work like that in the countryside of many European countries including France. In Britain, the postcodes are in a very detailed letter/number format and they point to on average just 15 houses, so that you can find somewhere really easily using on-line mapping services or Sat Navs just by putting in the postcode. A remote farm with no real street address is likely to have its own postcode in Britain. In the USA, the zip codes cover huge areas, but there the problem is solved because every building has its own street address. In France and other continental European countries, a farm or wine producer, for example, in the middle of 'La France Profonde' the deepest countryside, has nothing much in the way of an address. The address has simply its name, postcode and village. The postcode can cover a huge area with its center on an administrative town. You might find the name of a hamlet, but for a winery in the middle of a vineyard, there's very little chance of finding it using a Sat Nav without making a few phone calls to get directions. GPS codes are making life much easier as long as you own a Sat Nav device too. Increasingly, French and other European wine producers will give their GPS coordinates on their websites or on other literature, or they will give them to you over the phone. You can just tap these into the Sat Nav and find the winery without the need to find a mobile phone signal and try to understand road directions in a foreign language. The website that offers on-line travel guides to wine regions, Wine Travel Guides, has now added GPS codes to all the recommended wineries, hotels and restaurants on its guides. Using the GPS codes programed into their Sat Navs, independent travelers to wine regions can arrive at their winery appointments or wine country restaurants on time and find that remote hotel at the end of the day without a problem. |
