COPIA - A Napa Valley Education

COPIA, rather grandly sub-titled The American Center for Wine Food and Arts is a must-visit for a wine or food lover if your travels take you to the Napa Valley in California. It was created originally with funding from the legendary wine producer Robert Mondavi together with his wife Magrit. In his 'Visionary' statement he says: "Margrit and I had a vision of a place that would celebrate and explore the abundance and diversity of this country's fine food and wine."

Everything about COPIA seems to embrace education into the appreciation of wine, food and even the arts. You can spend half a day there exploring the world of wine through interactive exhibitions, by tasting wine either on your own from a dispenser or through talking with knowledgeable experts, or even attending a class. For a breath of fresh air, it's worth taking a walk in the garden where you are encouraged to use all your senses to appreciate the plants used in cooking or whose natural fragrances are characteristic wine aromas. Then there are the art displays - permanent and temporary exhibitions - the current one (on until June) is a photographic exhibition celebrating the fact that wine is now produced in all the 50 States of the USA and includes some fascinating images.

As well as a café, there is fine dining available at Julia's Kitchen inspired by and named after the late Julia Childs, and then you probably won't be able to go by the shop without stopping and buying something. It stocks wines, wine accessories and artifacts, kitchen gadgets, books and much more.

COPIA is more than just somewhere to pop into for a day as it serves as a center for ongoing wine education, running Wine & Spirit Education Trust courses, and also holds concerts and other events. There is a membership scheme for those who wish to support the center (it's a non-profit making venture and relies heavily on memberships) and this gives a range of discounts for members on dining, winery tastings and all the events they run. From this week they will offer members a discount on subscriptions to Wine Travel Guides too.
